The Jefferson Committee on Diplomacy is one of VAMUN’s two ad hoc committees. It aims to highlight the diplomatic skills Thomas Jefferson, UVa’s founder, possessed and prized. The background guide for this committee will be released three days before the first conference session. This makes JCD a particularly realistic simulation since policymakers have limited time to evaluate issues before addressing them. The focus of JCD is not compiling the most thorough research, but rather making the best possible decisions in the absence of perfect information. This committee is suited for experienced delegates comfortable with fast paced debate, strategic thinking, and great uncertainty. It is our ultimate aim to challenge delegates beyond what they have experienced in any other committee, forcing them to devise creative solutions to scenarios they could never possibly predict. Adaptability and ingenuity thus will be nothing short of key.

Sean Rumage is a fourth year from the humble, smelly town of Tillamook, Oregon (have you ever had our cheese?). Majoring in Economics and Middle Eastern Studies, Sean is an avid language learner and spent the entire 2016-17 school year studying Arabic in Amman, Jordan. Returning to Model UN after this extended break, he couldn’t be more excited to create and run the JCD with Liam, the official Michael Scott of IRO. Outside of class, Sean enjoys spending his time traveling to random foreign countries, finding new ways to tear ligaments in his right knee, and writing about love in the Cavalier Daily, UVa’s student-run newspaper.

Liam Kraft is a fourth year from the illustrious New England paradise of New Fairfield, Connecticut. Majoring in Foreign Affairs and Economics, Liam serves as President of the International Relations Organization (IRO) at U.Va., VAMUN’s parent organization. This will be Liam’s fourth time crisis directing at VAMUN, including as Head Crisis Director of the Wilson Global Systems Simulation at VAMUN XXXV. Outside of homework and IRO, Liam enjoys playing racquet sports, dreaming of spending his time traveling to random foreign countries, and eating a fine variety of cheeses (but never Tillamook, sorry Sean). VAMUN has consistently been one of Liam’s favorite college experiences every year and he is elated to close out his fourth year in the JCD with Sean.
