As the European powers begin to look towards largely unexplored territory in Africa, tensions begin brewing as nations attempt to divide the continent between them. Africa is ripe with natural resources to fuel the growing industries in Europe, which is the driving force behind their competing claims. Hoping to diffuse the potential of conflict, King Leopold II and Otto von Bismarck proposed a conference to formalize the division of Africa among 13 major European powers, and the United States. This conference will convene to devise a formal policy for the continent and hopefully abate unwanted military conflict in the process.
